WASHINGTON — Davidson baseball freshman Jed Howard has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday morning.
Howard, of Lynchburg, Va., is the second Wildcat to receive the honor in as many weeks, following pitcher Cooper Cavanaugh, who was selected Feb. 20.
"Jed had an outstanding weekend," said head coach Rucker Taylor. "He'd been out with an injury, so for him to have that success with limited live action is an encouraging sign. We're very happy to have him back."
In the lineup as a designated hitter against Villanova, Howard was 7-for-11 at the plate (.636) with a double and five RBIs. In his college debut on Friday, Howard went 4-for-4 with four RBIs as the Wildcats won 11-8. That included RBI-singles in the second and third, a two-RBI hit in the fifth and a double in the seventh.
Howard and the Wildcats visit Duke on Tuesday afternoon.
