Men's Track & Field Ready for A-10 Indoor Championships
2/22/2024 11:00:00 AM | Men's Track & Field
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's track and field team is set for the 2024 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Friday and Saturday. Nine Wildcats are slated to compete in individual events, and three relay teams are entered.
"During this indoor season, we did a good job of posting some of the best marks in the conference," said first-year head coach Matt Stuck. "We are looking forward to testing ourselves against strong A-10 competition this weekend."
The 'Cats have been anchored by juniors Jayden Smith and Jack Muldoon as well as senior Josh Hardin during the indoor campaign.
Smith will be running for his third consecutive A-10 gold in the 60-meter hurdles after he set a new program record in the event this season. The Richmond, Va., native ran a 7.73 back on Feb. 3 at the Liberty Open. The mark still ranks tied for 26th in the country, putting him well within striking distance for a national qualifying bid.
Josh Hardin seeks his second career indoor title in the 400-meters after also setting a new program standard over the winter. The four-year vet comes into the weekend with the A-10's top time of 47.58 seconds, which he set at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 9. Hardin previously won A-10 indoor gold in the 400 back in 2022 and currently owns back-to-back outdoor titles in the same event.
Making the biggest jump from last season, though, has been Jack Muldoon. The third-year distance runner propelled himself into the Davidson record book after he clocked a 2:25.28 in just his second time running the 1,000-meters. He surpassed former teammate Owen Drometer, who won last year's indoor title with a then-record 2:26.76. Muldoon's 2024 mark comes into the weekend fourth-fastest in the conference.
Also set to compete is senior Isaac Bynum, who will run for his second career indoor medal in the 60 hurdles after taking bronze a season ago. He will also run the 400-meter leg on the distance medley relay and the opening leg on the 4x400 relay squad.
In field events, senior Jack Stajos will compete in the shot put after he took sixth last year. The Charlotte native had two throws over 15 meters a season ago, which put him third and sixth in the Davidson record books.
This year's indoor championships also have a new home. A year ago, Rhode Island hosted the indoor championships at Mackal Fieldhouse, but this season, the conference will hold the meet in a neutral venue at the 285,000 square-foot Virginia Beach Sports Center. It will also be the site for the 2024-25 NCAA Indoor Championships.
"Competing at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex will be great for our conference," said Stuck. "Having an elite banked track for our conference championship will allow A-10 athletes to demonstrate their skills and have the best opportunity to break records and qualify for nationals out of this meet."
Championship weekend will begin at 9 a.m. Friday with select field event finals. Track prelims will get underway at approximately 1:15 p.m.
