Teachman Set To Compete at NCAA East Regionals on Wednesday
5/26/2026 2:16:00 PM | Men's Track & Field
LEXINGTON, KY - Two-time A-10 Champion John Teachman is set to compete in the javelin at the NCAA East Regionals for the second straight outdoor season. This is the sixth consecutive outdoor season the Wildcats have had at least one scholar-athlete qualify for this stage of the NCAA Track & Field Championships.
Teachman is scheduled to throw on Wednesday, May 27 and the javelin is slated to start at approximately 1:00 p.m. ET. During competition at regionals, each person only gets three throws as opposed to six at all the other outdoor meets during the season. The people with the top 12 throws qualify for NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Last outdoor season, the sophomore threw 61.02m and ranked 41st across the NCAA East Regional. Teachman currently ranks 46th in the east region ahead of regionals this week.
"John's outdoor season this year has been gutsy," said throws coach Bob Luciano. "He entered his freshman year with an unheralded partial fracture in one of his lower vertebrae He could not pick up a javelin until late January. This year, John came in 100% healthy. We trained with a full volume of throws from late August through early March. Then John hurt his back again. From March through late May, John was unable to throw javelins in practice. We altered his training to minimize his back pain."
During the 2026 outdoor season, Teachman's personal-best and school-record throw came at the VertKlasse meet back in early April (64.79m). The Mt. Pleasant, S.C. native earned a gold medal in the javelin at the 2026 Atlantic 10 Championships with a mark of 64.41m.
"While it's been a challenging season, John has shown the ability to overcome adversity," said Coach Luciano.
There are many factors that make John Teachman a terrific javelin thrower. Teachman has worked tirelessly with Coach Luciano since he stepped foot on campus at Davidson College.
"He has a fast arm," explained Coach Luciano. "I am sure he could throw a baseball 90mph. He walks around campus visualizing and mimicking his throws. This season has helped him greatly as we have pivoted to different non-javelin throwing exercises."
Teachman is the only person representing the Atlantic 10 in javelin at NCAA East Regionals this season.
