Rhode Island Holds Off Wildcats

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Luis Kortright scored a game-high 26 points to lead Rhode Island past Davidson 79-74 in Atlantic 10 men's basketball action Tuesday evening inside John M. Belk Arena.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 10-5 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Rams improve to 8-7 and 2-0.
Despite the setback, Davidson placed four in double figures, paced by David Skogman's 20 points in his first game back from injury. Frontcourt mate Reed Bailey finished with 19 points, Bobby Durkin scored 14 off the bench and Grant Huffman had 10 to go with 4 rebounds and 5 assists.
David Fuchs added a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards for the Rams, who shot 51 percent.
The 'Cats slowly chipped away at a seven-point deficit early in the second half and eventually went back in front, 51-50, on a Bailey triple with 13:08 to play. But Rhode Island had an answer, scoring on its next two trips to take the lead for good.
Davidson, which hit 9-of-23 from deep, got to within one on separate occasions midway through the period but was unable inch closer as the Rams stretched the margin back to eight.
Rhode Island held a 35-27 advantage on the glass and got to the charity stripe 33 times.
After falling behind 13-4 to start the night, Davidson shook its sluggish start with an 18-3 run capped by a Skogman 3-pointer to take its first lead. The Rams responded with three straight treys sparking 13 unanswered before heading to the half up, 38-34.

Davidson will play its next two on the road beginning with a 2 p.m. tip at George Washington Saturday.
