‘Cats Fall in A-10 Opener to Dayton
1/3/2024 9:29:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Tabbed preseason favorites, Dayton extended its winning streak to eight straight and ended Davidson's run of seven consecutive with a 72-59 victory over the Wildcats to open the 2023-24 Atlantic 10 slate Wednesday inside Belk Arena.
Davidson, which hadn't dropped a contest in 40 days, falls to 10-4 (0-1 A-10) on the season.
Despite the setback, the 'Cats got a season-high 34 points from their reserves, led by Bobby Durkin's 14.
Daron Holmes II paced three Flyers in double figures with 18 points. Kobe Elvis and Nate Santos added 17 and 16, respectively.
After a slow start and multiple starters in foul trouble, Davidson's bench provided a little spark and cut an early double-digit deficit to 27-20 with a triple from Rikus Schulte, the first of his career. Dayton (11-2, 1-0 A-10) responded closing the opening period on a 9-1 run to take a 36-21 lead into the locker room.
The Flyers carried their momentum into the second half stretching the margin to 19 and all but putting the game out of reach. The Wildcats got to within 11 on a Durkin trey with 3:39 remaining but were unable to inch closer.
Dayton finished the contest shooting 50 percent, while holding the 'Cats to just 38.9 percent, including a 10-of-30 effort from deep.
