RICHMOND, Va. — Second-seeded Davidson made it interesting with nine late runs against No. 6 George Mason Wednesday evening, but the Wildcats ultimately came up on the short end of a 15-11 ballgame in the Atlantic 10 Tournament at The Diamond Wednesday afternoon.
The loss puts Davidson, now 30-23, in an elimination game against No. 3 Dayton at 11 a.m. Thursday.
George Mason (31-24) scored five runs in the first inning and led throughout while Patriots lefthander Ben Shields kept the Wildcats hitless until Michael Carico hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. But despite a double-digit deficit, the Wildcats refused to go quietly.
They scored six runs off four hits in the eighth, with Tyler Douglas starting the scoring with an RBI-single, and Michael O'Shaughnessy capping it with a two-RBI single to make it 15-8.
In the ninth, RBI-doubles from Friend and Wilson got the Wildcats within striking distance.
Wilson, playing his first game as A-10 Player of the Year, had two hits and extended his reached-base streak to 53 games. Nick Calero and Jake Wilhoit also had two hits.
Ryan Feczko (6-6) threw four innings in the loss.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Third-seeded Dayton enters Thursday 0-1 in the event, after an 11-inning 5-4 loss to George Mason Tuesday night. The Flyers were idle Wednesday.
The Wildcats took two of three games against Dayton in mid-April, winning 5-4 and 8-3 games after the Flyers took the opener 8-4.
The Flyers (24-33 overall) finished A-10 play with a 15-9 record, a half-game behind the Wildcats.
A win over the Flyers would put the Wildcats in another contest later Thursday (7 p.m.) against No. 1 Saint Joseph's or No. 5 Richmond, who play at 3 p.m.
