NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson's Bennett Flynn and Michael O'Shaughnessy have earned the latest Atlantic 10 Conference Pitcher and Rookie of the Week awards, respectively, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The two helped the first-place Wildcats earn an A-10 series sweep over Saint Louis over the weekend.
A right-hander, Flynn threw five innings, allowed just one hit and struck out two in Friday's 11-2 series-opening win over the Billikens. He had 1-2-3 innings in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. The award is the first of the year and second of the career for the senior from Mill Valley, Calif.
Recognized for the second time this season (also April 3), O'Shaughnessy hit .545 (6-for-11) with three home runs and nine RBIs against the Billikens. The freshman first baseman from Delmar, N.Y., posted a 2.031 OPS for the week, including a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.364 slugging percentage and hit all three home runs during Saturday's doubleheader.
He had a two-run homer in the ninth inning of Saturday's first game, helping the Wildcats rally to a 12-11 win with six runs in their final at-bat. In the 14-11 series finale victory, he hit a three-run homer in the fourth, a two-run homer in the eighth and also drove in the go-ahead run in a four-run fifth inning when he was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded.
