Wildcats Top Billikens 11-2 in Series Opener

Doubleheader set for 12 p.m. Saturday
In a series with first-place implications in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Wildcats (27-19 overall) improved to 13-5 in league play, while the Billikens fell to 12-7.
Davidson led 5-2 after five, then extended its lead with a six-run sixth inning that included a grand slam by second baseman Jack Cotrone. It was Cotrone's 12th homer of the year and his second grand slam (also vs. Lafayette in February). By the time Tyler Douglas hit a solo home run to right, the Wildcats led 11-2.
Then it was up to Flynn to close it out, and he did. He had 1-2-3 innings in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings, allowed just one hit and earned his fourth save.
Schomberg (7-2) returned to the mound Friday and navigated some turbulence in the first by holding the Billikens to one run after they loaded the bases with one out. He threw four innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs and striking out two.
Davidson scored four runs on four hits in the second, with Henry Koehler starting it off with a triple to center and Jacob Friend capping it with a two-run home run, his fourth in the last four games.
Everyone in the Davidson lineup had a hit Friday.
Ryan Wilson drew a walk in the third and had an RBI-single in the eighth to extend his reached-base streak to 46 games. The center fielder also made highlight-reel diving catches in the fourth and seventh.

The teams will play a doubleheader at 12 p.m. Saturday, an hour earlier than previously scheduled in order to get ahead of some potential inclement weather Saturday evening.
