DAVIDSON — Davidson baseball and Marist split an afternoon doubleheader Saturday at Wilson Field, with each team recording a seven-inning win.
Â
The Wildcats took the first game 5-1, before the Red Foxes won the second 14-8. The series concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
Â
Game 1
Davidson right-hander Will Schomberg struck out a career-best nine batters and led the Wildcats to a 5-1 victory over the Red Foxes.
Â
Schomberg improved to 2-1 with a five-inning performance, while allowing just two hits and one earned run and walking three. He started strong, striking out the side in the first and three more in the second.
Â
Schomberg had early run support, too, in the form of a three-run double by Jacob Hinderleider in the first inning.
Â
The Wildcats added a run in the second when Jacob Friend bunted in Joe Haney, and Nick Calero made it 5-1 in the fifth when he scored from third on a passed ball.
Â
Pitcher Bennett Flynn came on in the sixth and kept Marist bats quiet over the final two frames, striking out four without allowing a hit.
Â
Game 2
Davidson hit three home runs and had the lead much of the way, but fell 14-8 after the Red Foxes scored 11 runs in the final three innings.
Â
Jack Cotrone, Henry Koehler and Ryan Wilson all homered for Davidson as the Wildcats built an early 3-0 lead and led 8-6 after five.
Â
Wilson's home run, a solo shot to in the fifth, was his team-leading eighth of the season and tied the game at 6-6. Cotrone's two-run homer, his sixth, came in a three-run first. And Koehler hit a solo shot in the fourth, his second of the year, to make it 5-3. A Cotrone RBI-single gave the Wildcats a 7-6 lead in the fifth, and Anthony Torreso followed with an RBI-double down the left field line.
Â
Hinderleider and Calero doubled in runs in the first and second, respectively.
Â
Starter Ryan Feczko threw four innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs and striking out two before handing the ball to the bullpen. AJ Pabst came into a two-on, no-out jam in the fifth and recorded three straight outs to keep the Wildcats in it. Â
