DAVIDSON, N.C. – Saint Joseph's torched the net at a 58 percent clip in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action on Wednesday night, defeating the Davidson Wildcats 72-56 inside Belk Arena.
The Wildcats overcame a 10-2 deficit early in the first quarter with an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the day, 16-14, thanks to an Elle Sutphin layup. Trailing just 18-16 after one, the Hawks drained 4-of-5 three-point attempts and outscored Davidson 24-11 in the second quarter to create a 15-point lead by halftime.
Davidson cut the Hawks' lead to single digits with under five minutes to go, 63-56, for the first time since the 7:19-mark in the second quarter after Mallorie Haines drained a pair of free throws and a three-pointer. The Wildcats' surge stopped there, however, as the Hawks closed out the game with a 9-0 run and sealed the 16-point victory.
Saint Joseph's shot 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the field in the first half, and won the battle on the glass 35-19. Senior Suzi-Rose Deegan led the Wildcats with 14 points and six rebounds, and SJU's Talya Brugler dropped 34.
