AMHERST, Mass. – The Davidson Wildcats dropped their third-straight Atlantic 10 contest on Sunday afternoon, falling 78-64 to reigning league champions, Massachusetts.
Issy Morgan had an efficient day, scoring 19 points off a 7-of-11 effort from the field and four made three's. The sophomore point guard also dished eight assists, just one shy of her career high. Elle Sutphin and Suzi-Rose Deegan joined Morgan in double figures, scoring 16 and 15, respectively, while Deegan also grabbed nine rebounds.
Morgan made a three-point play in the early goings to give Davidson a one-point lead, as the 'Cats and Mineutewomen went on to exchange leads until the 6:39-mark. The Wildcats took their last lead of the day at a 9-8 advantage after a jumper inside from Sutphin, before UMass rattled off an 8-0 run and held Davidson scoreless for the next 3:17 to pull ahead 24-15 at the end of the first.
Three minutes into the second quarter, the 'Cats cut their deficit back to 10 with a 3-pointer from Maddie Plank, but Massachusetts' Sam Breen, who ended with a game-high 22 points, struck with a mid-range jumper to bump the home team's lead back to 12.
Davidson drained three more treys before the end of the half, including one at the buzzer from Morgan, but the Minutewomen's 63.6 percent effort from the floor in the second made it a 41-27 game at the break.
Morgan opened up the second half with another three and was the first Wildcat to reach double-figures before UMass went on an 18-4 run and took its largest lead of the day, 59-34.
The Wildcats outscored UMass 21-14 in the fourth quarter, but Davidson's comeback ran out of time as Massachusetts secured the 14-point victory.
Overall, Davidson shot 43 percent from the floor while the Minutewomen shot 51 percent.
