DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson College wrestling team will make their 2023-24 debut at the Southeast Open hosted by Virginia Tech in Salem, Virginia on Saturday. Fifteen wrestlers will compete in total with eight entries in the Freshmen/Sophomore Division.
"The Southeast Open sets up really nice for us with both the Freshmen/Sophomore Division and an Open Division," said head coach Nate Carr Jr. "Everyone is kind of in the same boat in the freshmen/sophomore division and almost everyone is either making their debut or in their second year so, it's a really exciting opportunity for our young guys."
Seven athletes will make their collegiate debuts on Saturday: Enis Ljikovic at 125, Bryce Clement at 141, Brock Carey and Tyler Xavier-McKnight at 149, Wyatt Ferguson at 184, Dylan Smith at 197, and DJ Spring II at heavyweight.
Coming back for their second year competing in the freshmen/sophomore event will be Jackson Sichelstiel at 133. Sichelstiel made it to the semifinals at 133 pounds last season.
In the Open Division, seven Wildcats will return to the mat for their first action of the year including Hale Robinson at 133, Devon Diaco and Joshua Viarengo at 141, Matt McLaughlin at 149, Tanner Peake and Noah Frack at 157, Cameo Blankenship at 197, and Jake Fernicola at heavyweight.
Tanner Peake will compete in the Open Division despite entering his second year as a collegiate wrestler. The New Jersey native went 3-1 and made it to the semis in the Freshmen/Sophomore Division a year ago and will make the jump to this year's Open Division.
