McKnight and Ferguson Highlight Davidson's Showing at Southeast Open

SALEM, Va. – A pair of Davidson freshmen made it to the semifinals at the Southeast Open to pace the Wildcats in their first action of the season on Saturday. Tyler-Xavier McKnight took second in the Freshmen/Sophomore 149-pound division and Wyatt Ferguson took third in the 184-pound Freshmen/Sophomore bracket.
McKnight, a native of Catersville, Georgia, outscored his opponents 37-5 through the first four rounds to make it to the finals in the Freshmen/Sophomore 149-pound weight class. He met Virginia Tech's Luke Robie, a fellow freshmen in the final match before falling in an 8-2 decision. McKnight defeated opponents from Virginia, VMI. Morgan State and Life University to make it to the top match.
In the same freshman and sophomore bracket at 184, Wyatt Ferguson made quick work of his first two opponents with 13-2 and 9-1 decisions in the round of 32 and quarterfinals before falling to West Virginia's Ian Bush in the semis, 5-0. The Cincinnati, Ohio product bounced back with a 7-5 decision over WVU's Brian Finnerty in the third-place bout after collecting seven first-period points.
Also placing for the Wildcats was freshmen DJ Spring II at heavyweight. Spring took sixth place after recovering from an opening-match loss and won back-to-back matches in the consolation bracket before falling in the fifth-place match.
In the Open Division, Tanner Peake and Cameo Blankenship both went 2-2 with Peake bowing out one match before the fifth-place bout.
Overall, the Wildcats had 22 individual wins at the event.

The Wildcats will now prep for a dual match at No. 10 Iowa State next Sunday (Nov. 12).
