ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Davidson's Anderson Heap defeated Carson DesRosier of The Citadel, 8-5 (SV1), to capture the 149-pound Southern Conference Championship Saturday afternoon inside Kimmel Arena.
With the victory, Heap becomes the first Wildcat since Scott Patrick '15 to advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held March 19-21 in Cleveland, Ohio.
A native of St. Cloud, Fla., Heap advanced to Championship Saturday with a 17-3 quarterfinal win over Gardner-Webb's Charlie Sly, followed by an 8-5 semifinal decision over Nate Higley of Bellarmine Friday.
In the finals, the top-seeded Heap got a third-period take down to force sudden victory, where he didn't take long to record another and punch his ticket.
With the win, Heap improved to a perfect 11-0 against SoCon competition and 20-9 on the season.
As a team, Davidson finished with 42.5 points its highest total since the 1967 season. In addition, the Wildcats came home fifth in the team standings just nine behind The Citadel.
Appalachian State (94.5), which finished in a three-way tie for the regular season title with Chattanooga and The Citadel, claimed the team title thanks to Shephan Monchery's win in the final bout of the championships. The Mocs finished runner-up with 93.0 points followed by Bellarmine (88.5).
Earlier in the day, sophomore Bryce Griffin (165lbs) and senior Marc Koch (174lbs) won their respective consolation finals to place third.
Griffin had no problem with Presbyterian's Brandon Jacoby in the consolation semifinals with a 17-1 tech fall. The sophomore was just as dominant in the third-place match with a 15-4 major over Noah Hall of Bellarmine.
Koch, who advanced to the consolation finals by defeating Isaiah Guerrero (Gardner-Webb), 11-5, pulled off a gritty 4-0 decision over App State's Colt Campbell to finish his career with a podium finish.
Davidson's Brady Joling (125lbs) and DJ Spring II (285) also advanced to day two but dropped their consolation semifinal matches in the morning session.
