WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Davidson College women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half of competition on the way to a 3-2 victory over George Washington on the road Thursday.Â
The Wildcats pick up their first conference win to become 1-6-2 in Atlantic 10 play and 4-10-2 overall while the Revolutionaries move to 3-11-3 overall and 0-8-1 in the league.Â
Davidson snapped a seven-match scoring drought in fine fashion by matching its highest goal output from the year.Â
"I am so proud of the response and performance from this group today" said head coach Riley Piechnick. "We had a slow start, but came out in the second half ready to compete and came back from a deficit for the first time this season. Riley Patton stepped up in a huge moment on a free kick in the final seconds of the game and showed great composure to find the back of the net. The piece we have been missing in the last few games is the final product, so to score three goals today is reassuring. Looking forward to building on this momentum and being back at home Sunday for our last game of the year."
The Wildcats' offensive output was produced by Annaliese Mann, with her first collegiate goal, Riley Patton, who netted her second of the season, and Savannah Pruitt who now leads the squad having tallied her third goal on the year.Â
Brooke Ditcham and Brooke Roumy served as clutch facilitators for the 'Cats, each dishing out one assist.Â
Emily Smith in a full-game's effort made three saves while back line members Mann, Roumy, Olivia Bestic and Charlotte Snead played every minute of the match.Â
After back-and-forth action for the majority of the first half, George Washington struck first capitalizing off of a corner kick in the 39th minute, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.Â
Following the break, the Wildcats dominated the opening stanza of the second half netting their first goal when Pruitt cleaned up a defected ball over GW goalkeeper Ainsley Lumpe's head.Â
With the first tied score of the match, Davidson went on to take its first lead when Mann was able to find the back of the net through a chaotic jumble of the feet.Â
The Revolutionaries were able to knot the score once more after being awarded a penalty kick that Isabel Kelly converted on. The penalty kick was the only shot that George Washington would have over the second half.Â
With only 11 seconds on the clock and the score tied 2-2, a costly foul outside of the box set Patton up for a picture perfect shot that landed just out of reach of Lumpe on the way to a Davidson 3-2 win.Â
For the match, Davidson held advantages in shots (15-7) and corners (4-2) while George Washington led in shots on goal (5-4). Notably, of the 'Cats four total shots on target, three ended in goals.Â
