Deegan Reaches 1,000; 'Cats Clip Billikens 75-71

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Suzi-Rose Deegan became the 22nd member of Davidson women's basketball's 1,000-point club and dropped a season-high 22 points in a 75-71 victory over Saint Louis on Wednesday night, extending the Wildcats' win streak to four straight.

Elle Sutphin scored a game-high 25 points to go with 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season in a victory that improves the 'Cats to 11-9 overall and 4-2 in Atlantic 10 play.

The Billikens got the first punch in on McKillop Court, as they got out to a 15-5 lead to start off the contest and took a six-point, 21-15, lead after the first quarter.

The Wildcats' offense responded in the second however, stringing together a 6-0 run to tie the game at 21-all and eventually taking their first lead of the day after a putback from Deegan. Trailing 32-29 with 2:54 to go in the half, Sutphin knocked down a trey and found Deegan on the next possession to push Davidson ahead 34-32, but the Billikens closed out the half with a six-point tear and took a 38-34 lead into the break.

Saint Louis extended its lead back up to 10 quickly in the third quarter, taking a 46-36 advantage with 8:10 left on the clock, before Maddie Plank ended the run with a three from the top of the key.

Later, while the Billikens pulled ahead 50-45, Plank found Deegan on a backdoor cut, as the Australia native sank the layup to surpass the 1,000 career points milestone. From there, Davidson used a 10-1 run over the final 2:26 of the quarter to chip away at the deficit and pull back in front, 57-56, with 10 minutes left to play.

Mallorie Haines led Davidson in the fourth, as she scored all eight of her points over the final stretch of play. The sophomore guard hit her first of two three's to get the 'Cats started in the fourth, before SLU pulled out a 6-1 run and went back up by three, 64-61. Haines then answered back with another three-pointer that kickstarted an eventual 9-2 run to give Davidson a 73-69 lead with 1:34 remaining. The Billikens made it a one possession game with 19.7 ticks to go, but Haines knocked down two free throws to seal the victory for the 'Cats, 75-71.

Plank joined Sutphin and Deegan in double figures with 11 points, and a career-high six assists.

Overall, Davidson shot 48.2 percent from the field while Saint Louis shot the ball at a 50.8 percent clip.
