Wildcats Fight in 1-0 Loss to Dayton

DAVIDSON — Davidson women's soccer coach Adam Denton liked the level of play he saw from his Wildcats Thursday night, especially in the second half of a 1-0 loss to Dayton in the teams' Atlantic 10 Conference opener.
"The second half, we adjusted a couple of little things in the midfield where we could retain possession of the ball better, and I think we did a good job of that," he said. "We created more opportunities in the second half."
The difference on the scoreboard came with a goal by last year's A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Itala Gemelli, who scored in the 27th minute.
The Wildcats' best opportunity came off the foot of Riley Patton at the 52-minute mark, but Dayton keeper Batoul Reda deflected it away.
Davidson keeper Mary Grace Bunch made a daring save of another Gemelli shot in the 67th minute to keep the Wildcats within striking distance.
Davidson finished with an 8-7 shots advantage and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
"What we do now is we learn from this and go to UMass, which is a tough trip, a tough place to play against another very good team," said Denton.
