Thursday vs. Dayton: Blackout and Title IX recognition
Off to its best start in program history, the 7-0-1 Davidson women's soccer team will transition to Atlantic 10 Conference play this week.
The Wildcats will open the 10-game league slate Thursday against Dayton at Alumni Stadium at 7 p.m. then visit UMass Sunday at 1 p.m.
"Both are going to be, like all A-10 games, really physical, tough matchups," said Davidson coach Adam Denton. "It's going to be a really exciting and challenging week for our group, and they're looking forward to both of these games."
The Wildcats have outscored their opponents 16-2 and registered six straight shutouts, including 7-0 against Carolina University last Sunday.
Aleia Gisolfi-McCready leads the Wildcats with three goals, while Brooke Ditcham, Phoebe Fowler and Riley Patton have scored two apiece.
Keeper Mary Grace Bunch has done her part behind a smothering defense, making 12 saves at an .857 percentage.
"We've done well in the non-conference and had the opportunity to work on some things, see players in some different systems, in different opportunities," said Denton. "All of that is going to be vital as we go into the A-10 games."
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton enters with a 6-1-1 record, having won its last three games since its lone loss to Ohio State.
The Flyers were picked second in the A-10's preseason coaches' poll and feature one of the league's top players in junior forward Itala Gemelli.
She was A-10 Offensive Player of the Year last season after scoring 12 goals, and Gemelli has scored an A-10 best six so far this year, to go with two assists. The Flyers also return First Team All-Conference players in midfielder Jessica Sheldon and defender Mackenzie Lutz and Second Team picks Laney Huber (F) and Marlee Taylor (MF).
In a series that dates to 1993, Davidson is seeking its first win over Dayton, which edged the Wildcats 1-0 in the 106th minute last season to win for the seventh time in as many meetings.
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
UMass is 1-4-3 entering Thursday's A-10 opener against VCU.
The Minutewomen were picked fifth in the A-10's preseason poll and have one of the league's top goalscorers in Lauren Bonavita, who has five goals this year.
UMass also returns A-10 Second Team picks Ashley Lamond (F) and Fiona Kane (D). Lamond was also an A-10 All-Rookie pick last year, alongside Chandler Pedolzky.
Davidson is 2-4-1 against UMass and won 1-0 in the teams' last meeting in the A-10 semifinals in the spring 2021 season.
