DAVIDSON – Nolan DeVos threw another gem as the Davidson Wildcats built a large lead and held off a late Richmond charge to win their Atlantic 10 Conference opener 8-5 at Wilson Field Friday night.
It's the 20th victory of the season for the Wildcats, who are now 20-5. It's the earliest Davidson has reached the 20-win mark since 1988, when the Wildcats also earned their 20th win on April 1.
Shortstop Jacob Hinderleider had two doubles and drove in three runs to lead the Wildcats, who built an 8-0 lead through four innings. Two of those runs capped a six-run second, which pushed the Wildcats' lead to 7-0. The second also included a two-RBI double by Henry Koehler and a Ryan Wilson RBI-single after the first run of the inning came in on Trevor Candelaria's fielder's choice.
By the time Hinderleider doubled in another run in the fourth, the Wildcats were ahead 8-0.
DeVos thrived with the early cushion, throwing six scoreless innings to improve to 5-1. He scattered five hits and struck out four before handing the ball to Alex Fenton, who threw 1-2-3 seventh and eighth innings. Bennett Flynn recorded the final three outs and forced a pop-out to end it with the tying run at the plate.
Richmond pulled within striking distance with five runs off three hits in the ninth.
The Wildcats struck with one run in the first when Parker Nolan singled in Candelaria. Nolan, Hinderleider, Wilson and Jake Wilhoit all finished with two hits.
