Wildcats Rally in the Ninth to Beat Seton Hall 6-5

3/26/2021 10:20:00 PM | Baseball

The Davidson baseball team rallied to beat Seton Hall 6-5 Friday night, marking the second straight home game the Wildcats have surged back to win in their final at-bat.

This time, there was not a walk-off grand slam — such as Parker Nolan provided in the 8-5 win over Spring Hill College last Sunday — but rather a walk-off walk by John Hosmer. His free pass plated the third run of the inning, helping the Wildcats extend their home winning streak to 13.

"A lot of guys contributed tonight," said coach Rucker Taylor. "We're a little limited with some guys banged up right now; this was a good team win as Seton Hall is well-coached and plays with a lot of positive emotion."

Davidson trailed 5-3 entering the ninth, but pinch hitter Matt Gravely led off with a single to right.

"Matt got a big hit to get the ninth inning started," said Taylor.

Two batters later, Alex Fedje-Johnson drove in pinch runner Brian Craven with a single to left. Then Henry Koehler walked. Then with two outs, Ruben Fontes fought back from an 0-2 count to single into the hole at shortstop. Trevor Candelaria drew a walk to plate Fedje-Johnson and tie it, and Hosmer followed with his walk, to drive in Koehler and his team-best 20th run of the season.

Fontes gave Davidson a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run shot to right-center for his fourth homer of the year and second in as many games. Jacob Hinderleider's first college home run, a blast to center, came in the third and cut the Pirates' lead to 5-3.

Gabe Levy got the start and allowed five earned runs in five innings, but settled in to retire eight of the final nine batters he faced. Jacob Peaden struck out four over the next 2.1 innings, before Bennett Flynn entered with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth. The right-hander, who excelled as a freshman closer last season, escaped with a strikeout and a flyout to center, keeping the Wildcats within reach.

Jake Biederman pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win.

"All of the guys out of the 'pen did a great job," said Taylor. "Bennett came in a tough spot and did an excellent job to keep us close. Jacob and Jake threw very well also."
