It was a grand day for Davidson hitters John Hosmer and Ruben Fontes, and the Wildcat pitchers kept Toledo at bay as the red and black took both games of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Wilson Field.
Davidson improved to 3-2 with 8-1 and 12-2 victories.
"Gabe Levy started things off for us and it was good to win the first inning in each game," said coach Rucker Taylor. "Blake Hely followed suit and threw a ton of strikes. Nolan DeVos and Jacob Peaden followed those two and did the same thing. It was encouraging to see both of those guys throw well. And we played clean defensively for the most part on a wet and long day, so that was encouraging. Offensively, we did some things well and obviously drove some balls that led to big innings."
Home run hitters
Hosmer hit his first two college home runs Saturday, including a grand slam in a six-run first inning of the nightcap. He also hit a solo bomb to left in the sixth inning of the first game.
But he was just as proud of earning two walks in Game 2.
"Those were really good at-bats," he said.
The 2019 Atlantic 10 home run leader, Ruben Fontes, was impressed with Hosmer's day.
"He's always been ready, and it was great to see him have a big day," said Fontes.
Fontes got in on the action as well, driving in six runs on the day, including four on a grand slam to right-center in the eighth inning of the opener. It's his first college grand slam.
The Wildcats' fourth home run Saturday came off the bat of freshman leadoff hitter Ryan Wilson. His two-run shot to center in the seventh inning of the second game made it 11-2.
On the mound
Davidson had solid pitching from the outset Saturday, covering the 18 innings with one starter and one reliever in each game.
Making his first start of the season, Levy threw 5.2 innings in the opener, walked none and struck out seven while allowing four hits and one earned run. DeVos earned the save with a 3.1-inning performance out of the bullpen, striking out four, walking one and allowing three hits.
Hely started the second game and tossed seven innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. He struck out five and walked two. Peaden finished out the final two innings, striking out four, walking two and keeping the Rockets hitless.
Runs, runs, runs
The Wildcats scored in a variety of ways Saturday, including three runs on wild pitches.
Trevor Candelaria and Alex Fedje-Johnson had RBI-doubles, Fontes drove in a run on a groundout and Garrett Browder's fourth-inning sacrifice bunt in the opener made it 3-0.
Fedje-Johnson and Tyler Douglas had RBI-sacrifice flies in the nightcap.
