MACON, Ga. – Despite grabbing an early lead, Davidson was unable to counter a hat trick from Mercer's Nicole Icen and dropped a 6-1 decision on the road Sunday afternoon in women's soccer at Betts Stadium.
The Wildcats took the early 1-0 lead thanks to Gretchen Pearson's first goal of the season at the 7:13 mark, but Mercer would score six unanswered goals the rest of the way to take the victory.
Comments from head coach Adam Denton
"Really disappointing game for the team today. We started well with an early goal, but after it was scored we were too often second best in 50/50s all over the field. Mercer was first to the ball and put us under pressure that we did not cope well enough with. The early goals we conceded in the second half put the game out of reach for us. We did not compete enough with the ball in the box and this was evident from the goals we conceded from restarts."
"We have to put this behind us and move on quickly as we prepare for our next weekend games. This was a poor performance by the standards we have set early in the season and we will be focused on bouncing back quickly in the next games vs Western Carolina and Georgia Southern both at home."
