DAVIDSON, N.C. – For the first time in Atlantic 10 play this season, Davidson baseball dropped its series opener, falling 9-5 to Dayton Thursday at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats slip to 32-17, 14-8 while Dayton improves to 19-31, 8-14.
Davidson was led by a trio of two-hit performers in juniors Eric Jones and Max Bazin and sophomore Ward Coleman. Senior Alec Acosta scored twice, and Jones and classmate Justin Lebek each launched a long ball.
Dayton took the lead early, blasting a solo shot in the second. The Flyers tacked on two more runs the following frame before the 'Cats got on the board via Lebek's seventh homer of the season.
The Flyers responded by plating four runs in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead before Acosta reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a Jones walk, and came home on a laser sent back up the middle from sophomore Brett Centracchio.
Dayton scored again in the sixth to maintain their six run lead until freshman Alex Mardiney doubled, moved to third on a Coleman connection, and came home on a fielder's choice from senior Andrew Born.
Davidson looked to rally in the ninth, after Acosta was hit-by-pitch and Jones went yard for the 11thtime this season.
Junior Andrew Ashur was flawless out of the bullpen, facing his minimum and recording back-to-back strikeouts.
With his four at bats in the contest, Acosta tied the program record for career at bats with 804. The two RBI from Jones brings him just three away from breaking the single-season record.
Davidson will return to action Friday for a 2:00 p.m. matinee, honoring its seven graduating members from the 2018 roster prior to first pitch.
