TUCSON, Ariz. -- Davidson catcher Eric Jones has been tabbed a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, the publication's office announced Monday. He becomes the third player in the last two seasons (joining now-graduated sluggers Will Robertson and Brian Fortier) to earn the distinction and the seventh in program history.
Jones ignited during the week, posting a .462 average after going 6-for-13 and guiding the 'Cats to four victories, including a 3-1 win over 2017 NCAA Super Regional participant Wake Forest. Five of Jones' hits were for extra-bases, including three homers (one grand slam). He also drove in 17 during the week, a Davidson record for a single week.
Jones, who serves as a utility player for the 'Cats, clubbed two homers in Davidson's Sunday sweep of Georgetown, including his first collegiate grand slam off the Hoyas' All-American Cape Cod League reliever. It was the third time in his career he's had a multi-homer game, and he also went yard and doubled in Saturday's contest. Jones' long ball Saturday was a part of a school-record setting day for the 'Cats, where their seven homers set a new single-game record.
He drove in two against Wake Forest, three in Friday's contest, five on Saturday, and seven Sunday, after breaking the 5-5 tie with Georgetown in the bottom of the sixth.
The junior, who was a 2017 A-10 All-Championship team selection and fell one hit shy of the A-10 tournament record, posted a 1.308 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base clip.
Davidson won all four of its contests by a margin of 38-15 and is now 6-1 on the season. Jones leads the league in RBI, is tied with teammate Brett Centracchio for the league lead in homers, second in slugging (.870) and is ranked in the Top 10 with a .391 batting average.
Jones and the Wildcats prepare for their first road test Tuesday, traveling to Greensboro, N.C., to face North Carolina A&T.
