WINSTON-SALEM – Forward Luka Brajkovic had a double-double and guard Jon Axel Gudmundsson scored a game-high 21 points to lead Davidson in a 67-63 loss to Wake Forest in Joel Coliseum Monday night.
Both scored buckets to help Davidson (8-3) trim a nine-point halftime deficit to three early in the second half, but the Wildcats could get no closer in the teams' first meeting in 19 seasons.
Brajkovic, a freshman from Austria, finished with season-highs of 19 points and 14 boards for his second career double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds vs. Northeastern on Nov. 18), while Gudmundsson scored at least 20 points for the sixth time this year.
The Deacons (6-3) shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes to build a 33-24 lead at the break and led 27-13 with 8:40 left in the first half after a 9-0 run.
Davidson opened the second half with three straight buckets – completing an 8-0 run that began in the first half – to pull within 33-30, but Wake Forest answered with a 7-0 run. Davidson got within four, 50-46, at the 7:01 mark, but again the Deacons answered, this time with a 6-0 spurt. A Brajkovic layup with three seconds left again cut it to four and finalized the scoring.
Wake had four players score in double figures, led by the 16 of Brandon Childress and Jaylen Hoard.
Sophomore guard Kellan Grady missed his second straight game with an injury.
