CHARLESTON, S.C. – Jon Axel Gudmundsson scored a career-high 33 points, including the go-ahead trey with 53 seconds left, to lift Davidson over Wichita State, 57-53, on day one of the 2018 Charleston Classic Thursday at TD Arena.
The Wildcats will face No. 23 Purdue in the semifinals tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
On a night Davidson (3-0) shot just 36.5 percent, Gudmundsson finished 9-of-14 from the floor and 12-of-13 at the charity stripe, while hauling in 8 rebounds.
KiShawn Pritchett joined his backcourt mate in double figures with 10 points and grabbed 8 boards of his own.
Despite its cold-shooting night, Davidson was impressive at the defensive end holding the Shockers to just 20 percent (7-35) after intermission and 30.8 percent for the game.
Trailing 37-27 with 15:28 to play, the Wildcats responded with 11 straight, including a Carter Collins' left-handed floater as the shot clock expired, to take their first lead since the opening minutes.
After the Shockers went back in front, Gudmundsson, who scored the final 12 points for the 'Cats, tied the game, 50-50, on a 3-point play with 2:34 left, before hitting the eventual game-winner two possessions later.
Markus McDuffie paced two Shockers in double digits with 18 points.
Wichita State (1-2) used a 15-5 run to go up 10 (27-17) late in first half, but the Wildcats closed on a spurt of their own, capped by a deep Gudmundsson 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 32-27 at the break.
