LOWELL, Mass. -- After a historic postseason and dynamic career, Davidson baseball senior Durin O'Linger has extended his career, signing a free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox organization early Thursday morning.
The Tampa, Fla., native will begin with Rookie League affiliate the Lowell Spinners, in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Spinners began their 2017 campaign Monday, and are currently 1-3 on the young season.
O'Linger achieved national fame after tossing over 500 pitches during the course of the Atlantic 10 Championship, NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, and NCAA Super Regional in College Station, Texas. During that time span, he collected three wins and a save, striking out 21 across six contests. He was chosen as Co-MVP of the A-10 Tournament and named to the All-Championship team.
He finished the year with a team-best 3.16 ERA and a 9-3, tossing 116.2 innings and fanning 96 (5th all-time for single-season). O'Linger walked a league-low 29 batters, and exits Davidson ranked tied for 3rd in career shutouts (2), tied for 5th in single-season wins, tied for 7th in career ERA (3.44), ranks 9th in career wins (17), tied for 9th in walks per nine innings (2.5) and 10th in career Ks (195). He leaves the 'Cats as the winningest player (team wins) in school history at 138 wins.
O'Linger, a two-time A-10 All-Academic team selection and Magna Cum Laude graduate, was slated to begin pharmacy school this fall at the University of Florida.
SOUND BITES
Durin O'Linger
"I am extremely fortunate to have this opportunity to continue playing the game I love. I can't thank the Red Sox organization enough for giving me the chance to prolong my playing career. And I want to thank all of Davidson baseball, especially our coaching staff, for supporting me and believing in me every step of the way."
Dick Cooke, Head Coach
"What a great exclamation point for Durin's stellar career after an epic postseason run. I am very proud for how he's represented Davidson and the baseball program. I know that I, and everyone else, look forward to further tracking his career."
Ryan Munger, Assistant Coach
"I couldn't help but smile when Durin called me and told me he was getting to sign with the Red Sox. He is the best pitching competitor in the history of Davidson College, and there is nobody more deserving than him. He has earned legendary status around here, and my expectations are for him to continue to pitch at extremely high and competitive level. That's who he is and what he does. The Red Sox got a heck of a pitcher and an even better person, and I'm so happy and proud of Durin."
Aaron Lynch, Assistant Coach (Pitching and Bullpen)
"I haven't seen many other guys who are as special as Durin. I think what separates him from others is his ability to flip a switch and be locked in when it's time to be ready. He has one of the best mindsets around, and when he goes out and has success, I won't be surprised at all. I wish him nothing but the best and can't wait to watch him pitch again."
