SLU Rallies In Ninth; Evens Series on Senior Day

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite leading by four heading into the ninth, Davidson baseball suffered a 7-5 loss Saturday to Saint Louis at Wilson Field to even the series.
The 'Cats slip to 23-21 and 10-10 on the year, while SLU moves to 26-17 and 8-7.
Davidson had four players with multi-hit performances, led by senior Brian Fortier's three-hit day, including two for extra bases. Juniors Cam Johnson and Alec Acosta and sophomore Eric Jones each turned in two hits apiece. Fortier homered and tallied three RBI for the second time in two days.
Starting pitcher Josh Smutzer delivered a solid outing, going eight innings strong allowing just four hits and scattering two walks.
The 'Cats again attacked early, plating three runs in the opening frame to take the lead right away. Johnson led off the game reaching by error, took second on a groundout, and advanced to third on an Acosta single. Fortier then ripped a double to right center to bring him home. Jones then brought in Acosta with a screamer back up the middle, and then Fortier crossed the plate thanks to a double ripped down the left field line from sophomore Justin Lebek.
Davidson added to their lead in the fifth with Fortier's solo shot, his 14th of the year. The 'Cats added another run in the seventh, after Johnson singled and Fortier sacrificed him home.
Saint Louis cranked a solo shot in the second, and then took advantage of an error and timely gap hitting in the ninth, plating six runs and stealing the lead at 7-5.
Davidson's ten seniors and senior student manager were honored prior to the game.
The two squads will face off in an updated 12:30 first pitch Sunday to decide the series.
