ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The dramatics continued for Davidson baseball, who downed top-seeded VCU 8-4 Saturday afternoon to force a second game for the Atlantic 10 title, slated for 9:30 p.m. tonight at the Billikens Sports Complex held on the campus of Saint Louis University.
Sophomore Josh Hudson led the way, delivering 6.2 innings where he struck out five and allowed just two hits. The 'Cats collected 13 hits in the affair, including three each from junior Alec Acosta and sophomore Eric Jones. Acosta hit his fourth home run of the tournament.
Davidson opened the scoring in the second inning, after Jones led off with a single to left center. He advanced to third on a single from senior Jake Sidwell, who pushed the ball to right field. Jones then came home courtesy of a fielder's choice from freshman Brett Centracchio. After sophomore Max Bazin singled to put two 'Cats on, junior Cam Johnson doubled both of them home, giving the Wildcats the early 3-0 lead.
The 'Cats added two in each of the following frames. Acosta singled in the third, moved up on another Jones connection, and then scored on a double from sophomore Justin Lebek. Jones then came home on a balk from the Rams' pitcher. In the fourth, Bazin was hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning and Johnson reached on a VCU miscue to put two on. Senior Will Robertson then got in on the double action, sending both Bazin and Johnson home and put the 'Cats up 7-0. Acosta added to the momentum, stroking his solo shot over the left field wall.
VCU recorded their first hit in the fourth inning, and after a nearly-hour rain delay, Hudson returned for 2.2 innings, where he allowed just one more hit. Junior Connor Gordon picked up second save of the year after a solid relief outing where he retired all seven batters he faced.
The Rams avoided the shutout after a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases and gave senior Alex Gransback his first career grand slam.
