RICHMOND, Va. – Despite three-hit performances from Jake Sidwell and Alec Acosta, the Davidson baseball team fell to Richmond, 4-3, in game one of the weekend series Friday at Pitt Field.
A two-run homerun from Aaron Newman in the sixth overcame a 3-2 Davidson lead that clinched the game for the Spiders (18-14, 5-5 A-10).
Despite the loss, the Wildcats (18-16, 6-4 A-10) out hit Richmond, 10-8, but Davidson committed the only error of the game. Sidwell led both teams with a 3-for-5 performance with one RBI and one run scored.
Acosta and Max Bazin were the only other Wildcats with multiple hit performances. Acosta finished the day 3-for-4, while Bazin went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
On the mound, Clark Beeker (6-2) pitched his third complete game of the season, allowing four runs – three earned – off eight hits with three strikeouts for the loss.
Keenan Barlett (1-4) picked up the win, allowing three runs off nine hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Caleb Ward recorded the save, pitching the final two innings and giving up one hit.
Sidwell started off the day with a single to center field that gave the Wildcats early momentum and quickly took an 1-0 lead in the first off a Lee Miller ground out, but Richmond responded in the next at bat and tied the score off two hits.
After a silent second inning, Davidson took its largest lead of the contest with single runs in the third and fourth thanks to Sidwell, who doubled in the third and later scored before picking up his first RBI off a single in the fourth.
Richmond cut the Wildcat lead to 3-2 in the fourth off a Davidson error before a two-run homer in the sixth secured the contest.
The two teams will return to Pitt Field tomorrow, April 16 for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
