DAVIDSON, N.C. – A powerful performance from the four seniors propelled Davidson field hockey to its first Atlantic 10 win of the year, a thrilling 4-3 victory over Saint Francis at Belk Turf Field on a rainy Friday night.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 3-10 (1-3 A-10), and the Red Flash drop to 7-6 (1-3 A-10).
"Some of the goals that we've been focusing on, in terms of building play, really came together tonight," head coach Ginny Turner said. "Its always nice to execute and deliver on our corners, so that felt really good. Having that early lead really helped us, as we made some individual mistakes which cost us a little. We earned the win tonight, though, and we were able to make the most of our opportunities."
Junior Hannah Fisher netted the first goal of the game (from senior Becca Jones), sophomore Kristin Kisa scored her third goal of the season from senior Katherine English's assist, and then veterans Lauren McFayden and Anne Federico linked up to complete the senior quartet. The Wildcats' final goal came courtesy of English (assist from team-leader sophomore Courtney Byler). Goalkeeper Bean Rodriguez logged three saves.
Fisher scored her first goal of the season in perfectly executed fashion, taking the penalty corner and firing it in, then moving to the lower right end parallel with the cage. A richocheted shot found its way to her stick, and she sent the ball soaring to the left side of the board. Shortly after, Kisa, fresh off the bench and eager to contribute, received the ball from English, dribbled the ball down about six steps, and launched it hard from about 10 feet out to the center back of the cage.
With a 2-0 lead at the half, Davidson continued to pressure, but an early second-half goal from SFU's Brea Seabrook just below the arc cut the lead in half.
The Wildcats responded with two goals nearly back-to-back. McFayden took a redirect from her classmate Federico and sent the ball to the lower near post. In less than three minutes and a trio of penalty corners later, English sent the ball to the lower left back of the cage off the receiving stick of Byler.
The Red Flash attacked again and then cut the 'Cats lead to just one goal after scoring two goals (a second courtesy of Seabrook) within five minutes of each other.
Davidson wraps up its five-game homestand Sunday, welcoming A-10 foe Lock Haven for a 1:00 p.m. showdown.
