SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Davidson field hockey went perfect on the weekend, defeating non-conference foe Missouri State 3-1 Sunday.
The Wildcats improve to 6-12 on the season, while Missouri State slips to 2-11.
Senior captains Katherine English and Anne Federico each scored in the contest, joined by junior Hannah Fisher. Fisher and English each added an assist in the win, as well as sophomore Courtney Byler, who dished out her team-high 11th assist. Sophomore Bean Rodriguez tallied four saves from the cage.
The game began as a closely contested affair, with neither team breaking through despite ample shots. Davidson fired 18 in the first stanza alone. In the 32nd minute, English broke the scoreless tie, finding the perfect set up from classmate Becca Jones' and Fisher's perfect set up off a penalty corner.
Less than a minute later, Fisher added another score for the 'Cats, taking the feed from Byler and firing to the back of the cage from about 20 yards out.
With a 2-0 lead heading into the second half, Missouri State started to attack forcefully, firing off 11 total shots in the half. The Bears avoided the shutout, finding the net from a shot in the middle sent toward the left side and past Rodriguez with fifteen minutes remaining in play.
The Wildcats added insurance shortly thereafter, as English took a shot that was rebounded and Federico took the feed, firing it forward.
The Wildcats will conclude season Saturday, facing off against Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's for a special Senior Day showdown beginning at 11:30 a.m.
