DCFH Drops Defensive Battle on Senior Day

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey dropped a hard-fought battle with Atlantic 10 league foe Saint Joseph's, 2-0,  Saturday to conclude their 2016 campaign.

The Hawks finish the regular season 14-5, 8-0 A-10, while Davidson finishes with a 6-13, 2-6 A-10 ledger.

Juniors Paige Albert and Hannah Fisher and senior Anne Federico recorded the only shots for the 'Cats, while sophomore Bean Rodriguez collected six saves in a defensively-driven contest. Despite not scoring in the game, senior Katherine English tied the single-season assist record with nine, and sophomore Courtney Byler broke the record, tallying 11 helpers this season.

The first half was a deadlocked duel, as Davidson pulled in two big defensive saves- one at the start of the period and one at the conclusion- to keep the scoreboard on zeros. The Wildcats entered Saturday tied for first in the A-10 in the defensive saves statistic, and  Byler is now tied for first in the league with six.

On the first penalty corner of the contest, the Hawks set up their play, but Gampper had other ideas, shoving her stick in the line of the shot and pulling it down and out of the directory of the net. Near the end of the frame, Saint Joseph's tried to take advantage of another corner opportunity, but it was Byler this time who dove in the line of the fire and left the shutout intact.

As the second half began, SJU remained in control, capitalizing on a crowded center of the cage and launching the ball from the near post on the right side and finding the back of the cage. The scorer was the NCAA's leader in goals in sophomore Anna Willocks, who posted her 23rd of the season.

The Hawks added an insurance goal late in the final minutes of action, as an intercepted pass fell onto an SJU stick with a wide open cage.

Davidson honored its four seniors, Federico, Becca Jones, Lauren McFayden, and English prior to the start of the game.Â
