Davidson field hockey has secured its second straight postseason berth
It's the first time the Wildcats have secured consecutive A10 postseason berths since joining the league in 2014, and it's their third trip overall (2015, 2025, 2026).
"I've been saying since the preseason that this team is really resilient, and we just played so resilient tonight," said coach Zoe Almquist. "You could feel the belief from the time we walked into the locker room. I just knew they were ready to go."
The four-team tournament is set for next week at VCU, and the Wildcats will be the No. 4 seed. They'll face top-seeded Saint Joseph's at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5.
HOW THEY GOT THERE
The Wildcats (10-9 overall, 2-4 A10) entered Friday's contest needing to defeat Lock Haven (5-12, 0-6) by four goals or more to secure the berth, based on the A10 tiebreaker procedure. Davidson, La Salle and Saint Louis all finished 2-4 for the fourth and final spot, and the teams split their meetings, with the Wildcats beating La Salle, La Salle topping Saint Louis and SLU defeating Davidson.
But the Wildcats got the edge based on criteria No. 5: goal differential against common opponents, finishing at minus-2 compared to minus-5 from SLU and minus-14 from La Salle.
Friday, the Wildcats got two goals apiece from Ise Adams, Eva van der Kooi and Lourdes Wolf to pull away.
Emily Najarian got the Wildcats started with a first-quarter goal, before Adams scored the next two to give the Wildcats a 3-0 halftime lead.
The teams traded scores in the third quarter, with van der Kooi giving the Wildcats a 4-0 lead, and Lock Haven's Melanie Beall quickly cutting the deficit back to three.
But the Wildcats took over from there, as Wolf (2) and van der Kooi scored three goals in a four-minute, four-second span.
By then, the Wildcats could taste the victory — and a chance to play more field hockey.
Now they are in the postseason, back-to-back, for the first time. And by getting their 10th win, the Wildcats have won double-digit games in consecutive years for the first time since 2010 and 2011.
"To make history with this team's really cool," said Almquist. "I'm just extremely proud of them and extremely excited for the opportunity to go to the tournament again."
