George Mason Takes Series From Davidson Sunday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Davidson baseball team fell to the George Mason Patriots, 8-7, in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field. The Patriots took the Wildcats' final road series, 2-1.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 23-18 overall and 12-9 in the league, while George Mason improved to 20-25-1 on the season and 9-9 in the A-10.
Davidson was out hit by the Patriots, 12-9, while it committed two errors. George Mason's Derek Evans led both squads with a 3-for-3 performance with one run scored, while shortstop Alec Acosta led the Wildcats with two hits, including two doubles, two runs and two RBI in four at bats.
Six runs, including three unearned in the second eventually secured the win for the Patriots. The bottom of the second started off with a Wildcat error, which then led to four hits that scored six to allow George Mason to take an early 6-3 lead.
The Patriots continued with the momentum and added two more runs in the third off a two-RBI double with two outs for their five-run lead.
Davidson rallied in the sixth with three runs off two hits, including an Acosta two-run double to left center, but it was not enough to overcome the Patriot lead.
On the mound, RHP Ryan Lowe started the first 2.2 innings for Davidson, allowing eight runs – five earned – off seven hits with two strikeouts for the loss. RHP Josh Smutzer and Westin Whitmire also saw the mound for the 'Cats and threw two strikeouts each.
Tyler Zombro pitched the first seven innings for George Mason, allowing six runs – all earned – off eight hits with one strikeout to improve to 6-1 on the season. Two other Patriots saw the mound.
The Wildcats will return home to complete the regular season with five-straight home games starting with Duke Tuesday, May 5 at 6 p.m.
