SAVANNAH, Ga. — David Daniels hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Davidson capped off a two-game series vs. Michigan with a 3-2 victory Sunday morning at Grayson Stadium. The Wildcats fell in the afternoon contest against Tennessee Tech, 12-5, to finish out the weekend.
Davidson (3-1) took the two-game series after scoring a 5-4 extra-inning win yesterday against the Wolverines, who fell to 2-5 on the season.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Alec Acosta started the inning off with a walk. After moving over on a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Lowe struck out looking. Daniels stepped into the box and with two outs, hit his eighth career home run with a drive to left field to make it 3-2 for the 'Cats.
Freshman Connor Gordon came on to close it out, allowing just a hit in the top of the ninth to earn his first collegiate save. Westin Whitmire was credited with his first career win, pitching an inning of scoreless relief with a strikeout.
Starter Rob Bain pitched a quality start as he went seven innings with seven hits, two earned runs, a walk and five strikeouts.
Michigan scored in the first inning with three straight hits, including an RBI double, but Bain halted the Wolverine attack by striking out two swinging and finished the inning off with a groundout.
Davidson tied things up at 1-all in the sixth when Ryan Lowe laced a double to center field to drive home Jake Sidwell. The tie was short-lived as Michigan tacked on its second run in the seventh with an RBI single.
Michigan's Jayce Vancena started the game, going 5.1 innings and allowing four hits and a run, while striking out two. Brett Adcock suffered the defeat in relief, giving up the home run to Daniels.
In the afternoon game, Tennessee Tech scored eight runs in the sixth inning to break up a 4-all tie on its way to the 12-5 win. Davidson committed three errors in the inning, including a catcher's interference.
Lee Miller and Lowe each went 2-for-3, while Daniels hit an RBI double as they helped to pace the offense. Miller had a double and three RBIs, while Lowe scored twice and stole a base.
Nick Neitzel suffered the loss on the mound for the 'Cats, going five innings. He gave up eight hits, five runs with only three of them being earned, while walking three and striking out one.
Davidson scored three runs in the top of the 5th inning to grab a 4-2 lead, but Tennessee Tech came back to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning.
Davidson remains on the road and next travels to No. 5 South Carolina Tuesday, Feb. 24, for a 4 p.m. contest.
