CHARLOTTE, N.C.  — A pair of first-half goals by the Charlotte 49ers proved to be the difference as Davidson dropped a 2-0 decision to its cross-county rival Sunday evening at Transamerica Field in women's soccer.

Davidson (3-6-1) saw its recent three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) in the series come to an end, falling to 5-12-2 all-time against the 49ers, which reached the .500 mark at 3-3-1 on the season.

Charlotte struck first in the 23rd minute as it drew a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick. Amanda Jones lined up and took the shot, firing it to the left post, just past a diving Rachel Locke in goal. Locke got her right hand on the ball, but not enough to redirect the PK shot.

Davidson found itself down 2-0 after the 49ers struck again at the 26:32 mark. Charlotte's Perri Bonner got in behind the Wildcats' defense after a through ball to her from Sara Trexler at midfield and kick it to the far post past Locke, who came off her line to challenge.

The 'Cats' got a good look from Vicky Bruce, who gathered in a ball and take a direct shot from just outside the center of the 18-yard box. It was deflected, setting up a corner, which Bruce took and kicked one off the cross bar.

The second half went back and forth with the possession, but the Wildcats put the most pressure on goal. They took eight of their 12 shots in the half and earned three of their four total corners. Charlotte had eight shots as well in the half to finish with 15.

Davidson had its chances to try and push a couple across and tie it up. Rachael Western, Ashley Finke and Stephanie Piperno each had a shot directly on goal, only to see the 49ers' keeper Annika McHenry be right there to stop each of the shots.

Lauren Grace Himes nearly saw her first collegiate shot go in for a goal, heading a free kick off the cross bar. Unfortunately, Davidson saw the ball then deflect off a Charlotte defender and right into the arms of McHenry.

The 'Cats had one last attack in the final four minutes, getting a pair of shots from Bruce and Piperno, to go with a pair of corners, but Charlotte's defense halted each attempt to earn the shutout.

Locke finished with three saves, while the 49ers' McHenry stopped five.

The Wildcats continue on their season-long four-game road trip with a visit to the state of Florida to play North Florida, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
