DAVIDSON, N.C. — Three different Wildcats scored their first goals of the season and the Davidson women's soccer team closed out a four-game homestand with a solid 3-1 win over Army Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium on a hot and humid day.
The Wildcats (2-2) split their four games to open the season at home, capturing victories against Winthrop and Army, while falling to No. 5 Virginia Tech and UAB.
For the second game in a row, Davidson was facing a first-time opponent. Both teams played evenly through the first 42 minutes until the Wildcats struck first. Senior Stephanie Piperno knocked in her 13th career goal off a great feed from Vicky Bruce at the 42:12 mark.
Then right before halftime, Piperno drew a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Defender Dani Johnson lined up and scored her fourth career PK for a 2-0 lead.
Army's Hanna Rozzi cut the 'Cats' lead in half with a goal 26 seconds into the start of the second period.
Davidson held on the rest of the way, getting one more insurance goal off the foot of Adelaide Cummings in the 67th minute. She gathered in a loose ball off a keeper save on Becca Fisher's shot and kicked it near post for her first collegiate goal and a final score of 3-1.
Rachel Locke won her 21st career game between the pipes, stopping seven shots. The Black Knights' Jordan Cassalia had on save.
Army had a 19-10 advantage on shots, while also earning 10 corner kicks to Davidson's three.
The Wildcats hit the road for the first time this year, going to East Carolina and Coastal Carolina next weekend, Sept. 5-7.
