ELON, N.C. – Davidson took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Elon scored the next seven runs and defeated Davidson, 8-5 in Southern Conference baseball action Friday at Latham Park.
Elon (26-19, 12-10 SoCon) halved the deficit in the first, tied it in the second, and scored three runs in the fourth, while Davidson (25-14, 15-5 SoCon) left the bases loaded in the second, fourth and seventh innings without scoring a run.
The Phoenix totaled 13 hits to Davidson's 11, with all nine starters tallying at least one. Four had two hits while first baseman Tyler McVicar (1-for-4) was the only one with a multi-RBI game, hitting a two-run home run and driving in the final run of the go-ahead fourth inning on a fielder's choice play.
All nine Davidson starters reached base, with four enjoying two-hit games. Second baseman Andrew Pope reached base in his first three plate appearances, going 2-for-4 with a triple, single and walk. Shortstop Sam Foy went 2-for-5 with a two-RBI double. Right fielder Nathan Becker (1-for-5) led the fifth inning off with his 11th home run of the season.
With the game tied 4-4, Elon took its first lead with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth. The first three batters of the inning reached on hits, with designated hitter Wil Leathers (1-for-3) driving in the first run with an RBI-double. Shortstop Andy Moore (2-for-5) drove in Leathers with a base hit to right field, and the final run scored on McVicar's fielder's choice play.
Becker's home run in the fifth pulled the Wildcats back within two, 7-5, but RHP John Antonelli (1) was able to halt the 'Cats rally when he entered in the seventh inning. After allowing a walk to load the bases, Antonelli retired the next seven consecutive Wildcats, striking out two, to end the game.
Davidson jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game. Pope hit a leadoff triple and was singled home by first baseman David Daniels (2-for-5) with a grounder through the right. Centerfielder Forrest Brandt (1-for-4) drew a one-out walk, and he and Daniels advanced into scoring position on a groundout by Becker, allowing them both to score easily when Foy flared a double into short left field. Third baseman Ben Arkin (2-for-4) doubled to center to score Foy.
Elon halved the advantage in the bottom half of the inning, as McVicar sent the first pitch he saw the opposite way over the right-field fence for a two-run home run. The Phoenix then tied the game in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI-double by centerfielder Ryan Cooper and an RBI-single by third baseman Nick Zammarelli (2-for-3).
RHP Matt Saeta (0-1) entered in relief for Davidson in the fourth inning and allowed the go-ahead runs on four hits, of which two of the three were earned. However, he settled in and went 3.2 innings, allowing just a hit and a walk more and matching his career high of five strikeouts.
RHP Lucas Bakker (3-1) only allowed the fifth inning home run after surrendering four runs in the first inning. The five runs came on 10 hits and four walks, and he struck out three.
Davidson and Elon will continue the series Saturday at 3 p.m. RHP Danny Mooney (4-3, 2.26 ERA) is slated to start for the Wildcats, while RHP Michael Elefante (6-2, 4.33) is expected for the Phoenix.
