Elon Completes Sweep of Baseball

Box Score - Game 2

ELON, N.C. – Elon completed a three-game series sweep of Davidson by claiming both ends of a doubleheader with 8-2 scores Saturday in Southern Conference baseball action at Latham Park.

Davidson (8-18, 4-11 SoCon) was led for the day by outfielder Nathan Becker, who went 3-for-6 with an RBI, and designated hitter Ryan Lowe, who also went 3-or-6 and had a double. Shortstop Michael Zeblo reached base three times and scored a pair of runs.

Elon (17-11, 10-5 SoCon) once again was strong at the plate and on the mound in both contests. First baseman Ryan Kinsella hit four doubles and a home run in a 5-for-9 day with three RBI. Sebastian Gomez also had five hits on the day, including one home run, and designated hitter Joey Tomko hit a grand slam in the second game. RHP Kyle Webb (3-0) went 6 1/3 innings in the first game, yielding just one run on four hits and a walk and striking out six, while LHP Spencer Medick (4-1) went eight innings and allowed just one run on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts in Game 2.

An RBI-double by Kinsella in the first inning and an RBI-fielder's choice in the second by left fielder Blaine Bower gave Elon an early 2-0 advantage in Game 1. Bower reached base four times in the game, going 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Gomez's homer and an RBI-single by catcher Alex Swim (2-for-5) doubled the Phoenix lead in the fourth inning. Another RBI-single by Swim and a wild pitch in the sixth gave Elon a 6-0 lead.

Davidson got on the board in the top of the seventh when Zeblo (1-for-3, BB) scored from third on an infield single by Becker, but Elon added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning for an 8-1 advantage.

First baseman Andrew Barna, Zeblo and Lowe all walked to lead off the ninth inning, but Elon brought in LHP Tyler Manez to end the threat, as the 'Cats managed just one run on a sacrifice fly by catcher Chris Dyer.

RHP Danny Mooney (3-3) suffered the loss working six innings and allowing five earned runs.

In the second game, Kinsella notched the first run in the second inning by scoring on a wild pitch, and then the Phoenix scored six runs in the third inning. In the third, right fielder Niko Fraser drove in a run with a triple and then, with two outs, Kinsella drove him in with a double down the right field line. With Kinsella on, a walk and a fielding error loaded the bases and Tomko delivered with a grand slam.

Zeblo doubled to leadoff the fifth inning for Davidson, and later scored from third when catcher Daniel Gerow hit into a fielder's choice.

Kinsella added a solo home run in the seventh for Elon and Barna hit an RBI-single for the 'Cats in the ninth for the final margin.

RHP Matt Saeta (1-1) started for Davidson and pitched 2 2/3 innings, and was charged with three earned runs. RHP Michael Goldberg saw the bulk of the work on the mound for the Wildcats, holding Elon to two hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

Davidson completes an eight-game road swing Tuesday against Duke at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, home of the Triple-A Durham Bulls. First-pitch is set for 6 p.m.
