Stetson Rallies Past Davidson, 26-13

11/9/2013 7:11:00 PM | Football

DELAND, Fla. – Davidson was unable to maintain a halftime lead as Stetson earned its first ever Pioneer Football League victory, 26-13, Saturday evening in Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.

Quarterback Ryan Tentler was strong in the air and on the ground for Stetson (2-7, 1-5 PFL), completing 24 of 31 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, and also ran 17 times for a net of 111 yards with an 85-yard touchdown run.

William Morris moved within 53 yards of Davidson's single-season record for receiving yards with a five-catch, 130-yard performance. He ended up catching over half of quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff's completions, as he finished 9-of-27 for 164 yards. David Rogers gained 95 yards on 10 carries with a 49-yard touchdown run, and Robert Klein carried the ball 11 times for 65 yards. Garrett Diehl also returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.

Rogers' touchdown run with 4:07 remaining in the second quarter gave Davidson (0-10, 0-7 PFL) a 6-0 lead, but Stetson halved the margin before the end of the half with a 40-yard field goal. The Hatters then opened the second half with a touchdown drive capped by a 15-yard touchdown pass to Austin Marks for a 9-6 lead.

The Wildcats would not get any closer for the remainder of the game. Tentler outran the defense for an 85-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter for a 16-6 advantage, and Davidson pulled back within three as Garrett Diehl returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, but the Hatters controlled the fourth quarter.

Darius Chapes was left wide open with 10:06 remaining in the game for a 22-yard touchdown reception, and then the Stetson defense yielded just eight yards of offense on three Davidson drives.

A 25-yard field goal with 3:39 remaining in the game resulted in the final margin.

Davidson will conclude the season in Richardson Stadium Saturday, Nov. 23 against Campbell.

Notes:
Jake Hall, Robert Klein, Bobby Freeman and Mark Brannan served as game captains for Davidson, while Leonel Benoist '93 was the honorary game captain … Diehl's kickoff return was the first of his career and the first for Davidson in five years (Justin Williams, Nov. 8, 2008).
