DAVIDSON, N.C. – Danielle King's first goal of the season was a crucial one for Davidson, as it led the Wildcats to a 1-0 victory over NorPac foe Radford at Belk Turf Field Sunday afternoon.
The win has significant implications in the NorPac standings, moving the Wildcats (6-11, 2-6) ahead of in-state foe Appalachian State and into a position that would enable Davidson to clinch a tournament berth next weekend. Should Longwood defeat the Mountaineers Friday evening, the Wildcats would take the final spot and have a chance to move up in the standings when they face the Lancers on Sunday afternoon.
Davidson outshot the Highlanders 11-6, also claiming an 11-4 advantage on penalty corners. Katherine English led the way with five shots, for of which came on goal, followed by Melissa Funsten with four attempts. Anna Davis also had shot, while King scored on her lone shot of the contest. Tyler McFayden picked up the assist on King's goal.
Goalkeeper Carolyn Macek came up with a pair of stops, in addition to clearing several loose balls, on her way to her second career shutout.
Stacey Mackintosh had a pair of attempts to lead Radford (5-13, 2-4 NorPac). She joined teammate Paige Doughty in having the team's pair of shots on goal. Radford keeper Sydney Encarnacion made three saves, while Alayna Versage picked up a defensive save.
English nearly got the Wildcats on the board ten minutes into the game, with a hard shot clanking off the post. Funsten had the Wildcats only other attempt, missing the net wide as the scored remained 0-0 through 35 minutes of action.
The Wildcats were awarded six penalty corners in a six minutes span in the second half, with Encarnacion coming up with saves on a trio of shots by English. On the final corner, King took the feed from McFayden for the stop and then shot it in herself, hitting the left corner of the net for the goal.
Funsten and English each attempted to cushion the lead, but were denied. The insurance goal, however, was unnecessary as a solid defensive effort through the final minutes of play kept the Highlanders off the board and assured the Wildcats the 1-0 victory.
Davidson will host Longwood at Belk Turf Field in the team's annual Senior Day on Sunday, Nov. 3, in a 1 p.m. match.
