DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Wildcats offensive struggles continued against the NorPac's best team, as Davidson was unable to find the back of the net and fell to the Liberty Flames 3-0 Friday evening at Belk Turf Field in the team's annual Stick it to Cancer game.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the NorPac. The Flames move to 12-4 with a 6-0 conference mark.
Liberty outshot the Cats 12-2 and held a 9-1 advantage on penalty corners. Katherine English and Anna Davis each had a shot for Davidson, while Sydney Schreiner came up with a defensive save.
Natalie Barr scored two of Liberty's goals off a team-high seven shots. Serena Barr added two shots and an assist, while Hannah Jones notched a goal as well. Davidson goalkeeper Carolyn Macek came up with five stops on the Flames' nine shots on goal.
Davidson put up a strong defensive effort in the first half, allowing the Flames to break through just once. Midway through the period, Jones sent a corner to Serena Barr. Barr took the shot, which was deflected in by Jones to put Liberty on the board up 1-0. English attempted a shot soon after, but her efforts went wide as the Wildcats stayed scoreless.
The Flames struck in the opening minutes of the second half to cushion the lead. Helen Doolittle received a corner and sent it across the circle to Barr, who tapped it into the near corner for the score as Liberty took a 2-0 lead. The teams then continued to wage a defensive battle at midfield, though the Flames broke through for a flurry of shots in the final 10 minutes. Barr struck on back-to-back efforts, with Macek coming up with a stop and Schreiner stepping in for a defensive save.
Barr made another attempt following a corner that was blocked by Davis. Soon after, she dribbled a loose ball into the circle and struck for the second time, give them Flames a 3-0 lead with less than two minute to play. The score would carry to the end of the match as Liberty earned the shutout win.
Davidson returns to the turf Sunday afternoon when they host Radford in a NorPac match up at 1 p.m.
