GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman earned a 5-4 victory in the 12th inning in the first game and a 3-2 victory in the 10th inning of the second game to complete a series sweep of Davidson in a Southern Conference baseball doubleheader Friday at Latham Stadium.
Davidson finishes the season at 17-31 overall and 8-22 in SoCon play, while Furman concludes the regular season at 26-29, 13-17 in the SoCon.
In the bottom of the 12th inning of the first game, a throwing error on a stolen base attempt allowed centerfielder Will Miller to advance to third base, and first baseman Taylor Johnson drove him home with a walk-offsacrifice fly for a 5-4 Paladin win. In the bottom of the 10th inning of the second game, another throwing error on a stolen base attempt allowed shortstop Hunter Burton to reach third with no outs. Left fielder Andrew Cadger drew a walk and then catcher Zack Greenwell singled to center to drive in Burton for the game-winning run.
Senior Drew Gadaire led Davidson at the plate, going 6-for-11 for the day with four doubles. He finishes his stellar career with 244 career hits (third at Davidson), 54 doubles (third), 78 extra base hits (sixth) and 738 at-bats (fourth).
Davidson suffered a heartbreaking loss in Game 1, as senior Ryan Overcash allowed just one earned run in nine innings, but took a no decision as the Paladins scored a pair of unearned runs, including one in the bottom of the ninth when down to their final strike, to force extra innings. Overcash surrendered three runstotal on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts, retiring 11 straight batters in the middle innings of the game.
With a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth, Overcash allowed the game-tying run to reach base by issuing the first walk of the game by either team to Alex Abrams with two outs. Heath Burton pinch ran for Abrams and advanced to third base on a throwing error when he attempted to steal second base. Overcash got ahead of pinch hitter Paul Nitto with a 1-2 count, but Nitto came through and drove a base hit just past a diving Andrew Barna at third base to tie the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless 10th inning, Daniel Gerow hit a pinch-hit double off the wall in left-center field to drive in Barna for a 4-3 Davidson lead in the top of the 11th inning. Furman answered in the bottom half of the frame though as right fielder Jake Jones hit an RBI-single to score Heath Burton to tie the game at 4-4 and force a 12th inning.
Senior RHP Brian Russell was charged with the loss after entering in the 11th inning. Junior Michael Zeblo came in from shortstop to pitch the 10th and 11th innings, allowing the second game-tying run on three hits and a walk.
Davidson had held its 3-2 lead since the third inning. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead on RBI-singles by Barna and Zeblo in the first inning, but Furman tied the game in the second inning with a two-RBI single by catcher Zack Greenwell. Just one of the runs was earned.
Gadaire doubled in the third inning and was driven home on a two-out double by senior second baseman James Cerbie for the go-ahead run. Left fielder Forrest Brandt threw a runner out at home to end the sixth inning.
RHP Elliot Warford (5-0) earned the win after pitching the final three innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts. RHP Tyler Wood entered in the sixth inning and allowed just two hits while striking out three in four innings. LHP Nate Smith started and allowed three runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Freshman RHP Clark Beeker pitched well for Davidson in Game 2, allowing two runs on ninehits without issuing a walk and striking out four in 7.1 innings. Furman used six different pitchers with RHP Stephen Gary (4-1) earning the win.
Jake Jones gave Furman a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI-single, but senior Seth Freeman led the top of the ninth inning off with a pinch-hit double, and senior right fielder Jake Berman drove him home with two outs to tie the game at 2-2. Will Miller tried to extend a double into a triple to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, but was thrown out at third, and Russell (4-7) retired the next two batters to force extra innings. The Paladins were able to stike in the 10th inning though.
Zeblo hit his fourth home run of the season in the second game to give Davidson a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Berman threw a runner out at home from right field for an inning-ending double play in the fifth, but Will Miller hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
