Box Score - Game 2

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Davidson dropped the first game of a doubleheader at Western Carolina, 12-6, after surrendering nine runs in the sixth inning, but rallied with a six-run seventh inning in the second game for a 7-5 win, in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday at Hennon Stadium.

Sophomore left fielder Forrest Brandt went 4-for-7 with three walks and scored three runs for Davidson (10-14, 3-8 SoCon) on the day, while junior third baseman Andrew Barna went 4-for-5 with two RBI in the first game. Senior centerfielder Drew Gadaire drove in a pair of runs in each game and went 2-for-9 for the day.

Right fielder Cody Jones went 3-for-7 with four RBI to lead Western Carolina at the plate (19-8, 5-3 SoCon).

Davidson trailed 4-1 entering the seventh inning of the second game, but took advantage of a pair of Western Carolina errors and three bases on balls to score six runs despite getting just three hits. Senior first baseman Calvin Sigelbaum and sophomore catcher Chris Dyer drew back-to-back walks with one out and senior right fielder Jake Berman reached on an error, allowing Sigelbaum to score. Brandt singled to load the bases and Gadaire followed with a single to drive in Dyer and Berman to tie the game at 4-4.

A throwing error on the play allowed Brandt and Gadaire to take an extra base, and after Barna drew a walk, senior second baseman James Cerbie scored Brandt on an RBI-groundout for a 5-4 Davidson lead. Junior shortstop Michael Zeblo then drove in two with a pop-up that landed untouched behind the pitcher's mound.

RHP Clark Beeker earned his second career save entering with one out in the bottom of the seventh and holding the Catamounts to one run. A lead-off single followed by a double by centerfielder Julian Ridings pulled Western Carolina within two in the ninth inning, but the 'Cats were able to get Ridings out at home for the second out of the inning as he attempted to score on a throwing error. Beeker earned the final out on a fly out after a single by second baseman Ross Heffley brought the winning run to the plate.

Barna drove in Berman with a single in the first inning to give Davidson an early 1-0 lead, but left fielder Dykota Speiss hit a two-run home run in the second inning to put the Catamounts ahead 2-1. Western went ahead 4-1 in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jones and an RBI-single by catcher Adam Martin.

Senior RHP Ryan Overcash (2-4) picked up his second win of the season allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk in 6.1 innings and striking out five.

Davidson held a 6-3 lead in the first game but a nine-run sixth inning for the Catamounts doomed the 'Cats. Ridings drove in a run with a single up the middle with the bases loaded and then shortstop Aaron Attaway followed with a two-RBI single to right field to tie the game at 6-6. A single by Tyler White up the middle put the Catamounts on top 7-6, and Western added runs later in the inning on an RBI-single by Jones and a three-RBI triple by Bradley Strong. Strong scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch before LHP Justin Charles was able to get the final two outs to end the inning.

The game was tied 3-3 entering the fifth inning when Davidson took a 6-3 lead. Sigelbaum and Brandt both drew walks and Gadaire scored Sigelbaum with a double to right center. Barna drove in Brandt with a base hit and Cerbie then drove in Gadaire bunting for a base hit.

Davidson scored first in the game as Cerbie hit his team-leading third home run of the season in the second inning, but Western Carolina took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half with a two-run home run by Jones. Gadaire and Barna put Davidson ahead 3-2 in the top of the third with an RBI each, but an RBI-single to left field by Heffley tied the game at 3-3.

Davidson and Western Carolina will conclude the series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
