Early Home Runs Lead Coll. of Charleston Past Baseball, 6-2

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston scored four runs in the first inning on a pair of home runs en route to a 6-2 victory over Davidson in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday night at Patriots Point.
Centerfielder Marty Gantt (1-for-3) hit a three-run home run over the left field wall with no outs and left fielder Brandon Murray (2-for-3) hit a solo home run to left with two outs for the early, 4-0 College of Charleston (17-6, 9-2 SoCon) lead.
Junior shortstop Michael Zeblo led Davidson (8-12, 2-6 SoCon) offensively on the night going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior centerfielder Drew Gadaire (1-for-4) extended his hitting streak to seven games and his reached base streak to 26 games with a first-inning double.
After surrendering the four runs on four hits in the first inning, senior RHP Ryan Overcash (1-4) settled in and held the Cougars scoreless through the next six innings, yielding just two hits, three walks and a hit batter. RHP Christian Powell (4-1) scattered six hits and a walk and yielded just one unearned run to earn the win. Davidson had nine hits to the Cougars' eight, but hit into a season-high three double plays.
Davidson scored its first run of the game on a throwing error by the shortstop with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. Senior right fielder Jake Berman walked and moved to third on a double by Brandt, and then Gadaire hit a bouncer to the shortstop and reached safely on the errant throw in the dirt, allowing Berman to score.
Zeblo doubled off the left field wall to score junior third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-4) from first base in the top of the eighth inning reduce the deficit to two, but CofC added two runs in the bottom half for the final 6-2 margin.
First pitch in the game was delayed three hours, 21 minutes from the originally scheduled start time of 3 p.m. due to rain and lightning.
Davidson and College of Charleston will conclude the series Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
