Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Davidson got its lone scoring on junior first baseman Drew Gadaire's two-out, solo home run in the first, but the Samford Bulldogs answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and led the rest of the way in rubber match, for the 4-1 win and SoCon series victory Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Stadium.

After Gadaire's solo home run, Samford (19-11, 8-4) answered with two scores on four hits in the bottom of the inning and added a lone score in both the fourth and fifth, en route to the 4-1 victory for the series win over Davidson (13-14, 6-8 SoCon). Austin Miller hit a solo home run for Samford in the fourth, and the Bulldogs added their final score on a sacrifice fly by Phillip Ervin in the fifth.

Charles Basford (W, 3-2) held the Wildcats to just the lone run on six hits and struck out seven in 7 2/3 innings to pick up the win, and Andrew Jones (S, 7) faced the minimum in the ninth to earn the save.

Junior RHP Ryan Overcash (L, 1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. The Wildcats finished with six hits, as junior center fielder Seth Freeman, freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt, Gadaire, sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna, junior second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum and freshman right fielder Kelly Myers each recorded one.

Miller, who batted 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI, was the lone player to record more than one hit in the game, and the Bulldogs finished with nine.

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first on Gadaire's two-out, solo home run in the first, but the Bulldogs answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half to retake the lead. Ervin (single), Saxon Butler (double) and Miller (single) put together three hits for a run, and after Overcash picked off Miller, the Bulldogs added another run on an RBI-single by Gary Cramer. Overcash picked off his second runner to end the inning and keep it a one-run game.

Both teams got a one-out base hit in the second, but neither scratched a run. Freeman drew a one-out walk in the third, and Michael Johnson led off the home half with a walk, and both starters continued to strand runners until Miller put Samford ahead 3-1 with a leadoff home run in the fourth.

Myers slapped a one-out single into left field in the fifth but was caught stealing for the final out of the inning, and the Bulldogs tacked on another run on two hits in the bottom half. Brad Moss doubled to start the frame, took third as Johnson followed with a bunt single, and scored on Ervin's sacrifice fly that brought on senior LHP Mac Hunter. Hunter got out of the inning with a groundout and a fielder's choice and did not allow a hit over the final 3 2/3 innings.

The Wildcats had a scoring chance in the sixth when Freeman started the inning with a double down the right field line and Gadaire drew a one-out walk. But Ervin fielded a fly out from senior designated hitter Danny Weiss and doubled up Freeman at third to end the inning. Hunter worked a hitless bottom of the inning, and Barna singled up the middle to start the seventh inning, but Basford struck out the side to keep Samford ahead, 4-1.

Brandt hit a two-out single in the eighth inning to finally chase Basford, but reliever Arthur Strauss sat Gadaire on strikes for the final out of the inning. Hunter retired three straight in the bottom of the inning, but Jones did the same to the Wildcats in the top of the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season.

The Wildcats will return to action Wednesday night when they host UNC Asheville at 6 p.m. at Wilson Field, in game that was rescheduled after getting rained out. Davidson hosts UNCG at Wilson Field this weekend, with the series opening Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the series finale will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday.
