Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In a game that featured five lead changes, the Davidson Wildcats scored the final two runs on bases-loaded walks in the top of the ninth in a 5-4, comeback win over The Citadel Bulldogs in the opening game of the three-game SoCon Series Friday night at Riley Park.

Davidson (8-9, 3-3 SoCon) led twice — 1-0 in the top of the third and 3-2 in the top of the fifth, before The Citadel (7-10, 3-4 SoCon) put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead for a second time in the back-and-forth affair.

Entering what could have been the final at-bat of the game, the Wildcats got the tying and then winning run in the top of the ninth on a pair of bases-loaded walks to force the Bulldogs to bat in the bottom half. After senior RHP Mike Frongello (W, 2-1) worked two straight shutout innings to earn the win, senior RHP Andy Bass (S, 2) retired three straight in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Making the start for the Wildcats, junior LHP Chris Lamb allowed four runs on 11 hits while striking out nine in six innings.

Davidson finished with five runs on 12 hits, led by sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna, who batted 4-for-5 and drove in a pair. Freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (3-for-6) and junior first baseman Drew Gadaire (2-for-5, RBI) also had multi-hit games.

The Citadel got four runs off 13 hits, led by Justin Mackert (3-for-5, RBI) and Joe Jackson (3-for-3, RBI). Of the 25 combined hits, only Davidson's Barna and Gadaire had extra-base hits.

Citadel starter Austin Pritchard, who allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out seven and walked four in four innings, retired all three of his hitters in the first inning, and Drew DeKerlegand hit a one-out single in the bottom half for the game's first hit. Barna answered with Davidson's first hit of the game, a one-out double in the second, but Pritchard used a pair of punch-outs to keep the game scoreless. Jackson led off the second frame with a base hit to left, but Lamb equaled Pritchard with a strikeout, fielder's choice, and fly out before the Wildcats broke through in the top of the third.

Freshman catcher Daniel Gerow (1-for-4, RBI) slapped a one-out base hit to left and stole second to get into scoring position in the third. Junior centerfielder Seth Freeman took a walk but was erased as Brandt's fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs. Gadaire gave the Wildcats' the first run of the game with an RBI-single to left, and senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (1-for-3) took the second walk of the inning to kept the scoring chance alive. After a lengthy at-bat, Barna struck out to leave the bases juiced, but not before the Wildcats sent seven to the plate, took the 1-0 lead and forced Pritchard to throw over 30 pitches in the inning.

For a second straight inning, Hughston Armstrong led off the home half of the inning with a base hit for the Bulldogs, but Lamb left him on first base with two strikeouts and a fly out. The Citadel, though, got something going in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with no outs on two straight base hits and an infield bunt single. Lamb limited the damage with two straight strikeouts before Armstrong sent in a pair on a ball hit hard to sophomore shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-4, RBI). Lamb sat Nick Orvin on strikes for his third strikeout of the frame, but the Bulldogs finished the inning ahead, 2-1.

The Wildcats, though, equaled the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with no outs on two straight hits from Brandt (single) and Gadaire (double), followed by a walk to Weiss. Barna got his second hit of the game, a two-RBI single up the middle, to score Brandt and Gadaire, reclaim the lead for Davidson and chase Pritchard. Junior second baseman James Cerbie got a sac bunt down off reliever T.J. Clarkson to move runners to second and third, but Clarkson came back with two straight strikeouts to get out of the inning.

In the back-and-forth affair, the Bulldogs put together four straight hits for two runs to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth. DeKerlegand and Matt Simonelli started the inning with two straight base hits and scored when Mackert and Jackson followed with two more. Lamb retired the next three to keep it a one-run game.

Brandt was the only batter to record a hit in sixth when neither team allowed a run, and Barna got his third hit of the game, a one-out single, for no harm in the seventh. The Wildcats got out of a jam in the bottom of the inning, as Simonelli reached safely on an error at short to bring on Frongello in relief. A base hit by Mackert and a sac bunt put runners on second and third with one out, and Davidson took a gamble by intentionally walking William Ladd that paid off as Frongello got two straight ground balls to get out of the inning still trailing just one, 4-3.

The Citadel brought on closer Drew Mahaffey (L, 0-3) after Davidson got two on with two outs in the top of the eighth. Pincher hitter Will General (HBP) and Brandt (single) reached base, but Mahaffey only needed one pitch to get out of the frame and keep the Bulldogs ahead one, 4-3. Frongello allowed a one-out single to Orvin for no harm in the eighth to give Davidson a chance in the ninth.

And the 'Cats took advantage of the opportunity, getting the bases loaded with no outs to the tune of two runs in the ninth. Weiss started the inning with an infield single, and Barna (single) and junior pinch hitter Calvin Sigelbaum (error) loaded the bases despite both trying to put down sacrifice bunts. Zeblo and Gerow drew bases-loaded walks to tie the game and then put Davidson ahead, 5-4.

LHP Logan Cribb came out of the bullpen to slam the door on the Wildcat rally, but Bass did the same for Davidson in the top of the ninth, retiring three straight to pick up his second save of the season.

Davidson and the Citadel will play the second game of the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. RHP Ian Horkley (2-1, 4.15) is slated to start for the Wildcats against The Citadel's LHP Matt Talley (0-1, 4.80).
