WILMINGTON, N.C. – Davidson guard JP Kuhlman hit a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left to seal a 70-67 non-conference men's basketball victory over UNC Wilmington at Trask Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
With the Wildcats clinging to a 68-66 lead, UNCW's Cedrick Williams was fouled trying for a putback off an Adam Smith miss with 2.7 seconds left. Williams made the first free throw but missed the second. Kuhlman got the rebound and was fouled.
After the junior calmly sank two free throws, a long, last-chance heave by the Seahawks was on line but well short of the hoop.
Kuhlman finished with 21 points and seven rebounds, and De'Mon Brooks collected 14 points and seven boards for the Wildcats (4-1). Nik Cochran scored 13, Chris Czerapowicz netted nine, and Clint Mann added eight and four rebounds.
Keith Rendleman led the Seahawks (0-4) with 21 points and nine rebounds, and Adam Smith scored 14. Williams finished with 10 points, four rebounds and five blocked shots.
The 'Cats had to overcome major foul trouble as Jake Cohen, Brooks and Mann all fouled out with over two minutes left in the game.
With the game tied, Czerapowicz made a runner to put Davidson ahead 68-66 with 2:06 to play. Neither team could score from that point until Williams' free throw.
UNCW jumped out to a 10-4 lead to start the game as the Seahawks opened the contest 6-for-8 from the floor and Davidson committed four turnovers. A 10-2 run, capped by a pair of Will Reigel free throws, gave Davidson its first lead of the game at 22-20 with 7:08 left in the half.
The game featured 12 ties and 14 lead changes from there, including 10 lead changes in the second half as neither team could pull away.
Davidson went ahead 60-55 on a Mann jumper with 7:37 left on the clock, but an 8-2 flurry, capped by a Williams free throw, put the Seahawks back in front 63-62. The teams traded the lead three more times before Czerapowicz's runner put Davidson ahead for good.
The Wildcats open conference play at Wofford Thursday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m.
Game Notes: Kuhlman scored 20-plus points for the sixth time in his career and first this season… It was Davidson's first win at Trask Coliseum… It was the 'Cats' first game against UNCW since 1995.
