GREENSBORO, N.C. – In the first of three separate midweek SoCon games, the UNC Greensboro Spartans held off a late-game rally by the Davidson Wildcats to pick up their first league win of the season.
UNC Greensboro (12-12, 1-6 SoCon) cut into an early 3-0 Davidson (13-12, 4-6 SoCon) lead with a pair of runs in the second before jumping ahead 6-3 with a three-spot in the fourth and a run in the fifth. After finally chasing Spartan starter Warren Slack (2-5) in the ninth, Davidson got two runs back off the Greensboro bullpen on two hits and an error, but stranded the winning run at first.
The Wildcats started the scoring in the first, getting three runs off four hits off Slack, who otherwise worked 7 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to earn the win. Sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire (2-for-5, RBI) hit a one-out single into center field and scored as junior first baseman Danny Weiss (2-for-3, RBI) followed with a triple into deep center field. Freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-5, RBI) plated Weiss with an RBI-single through the hole and into left field in the next at-bat, and senior catcher Tommy Piacenza (1-for-3, RBI) made it 3-0 with a double into right center field, as the Wildcats got their fourth straight hit off Slack.
Greensboro got a pair back in the second on a two-run home run by first baseman Lloyd Enzor, also scoring catcher Ed Jayjack who took a one-out walk. Davidson starter Thomas Middour allowed two more hits in the inning, but sandwiched them between strikeouts to limit the damage.
The Spartans took a 5-3 lead in the fourth with three runs on two walks, a hit and an error. Sophomore right-hander Brian Russell (2-1) took over for Middour and got a fly out before walking designated hitter Zach Leach. A fielding error by Barna at third allowed shortstop Eric Brindle to reach safely and Leach to take second, before third baseman Kris Richards singled to load the bases. Left fielder Harry Slade's sacrifice fly scored Leach for the first run and a passed ball allowed Brindle to score the second. Right fielder Drew Gehringer walked in the next at-bat and was caught stealing second as Richards scored from third to make it 5-3. Russell was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on one hit in an inning of relief.
Greensboro added another run in the fifth when center fielder Corey Overholtzer led off with a triple down the left field line as junior submariner Mike Frongello entered to tie the school appearance record with his 82nd career appearance. Overholtzer scored in the next at-bat as second baseman Ray Quinones grounded out.
The Wildcats stranded five runners, failing to take advantage of late-game chances including a leadoff single from Weiss in the eighth, before finally putting something together in the top of the ninth. Freshman designated hitter Michael Goldberg reached safely on an error as Enzor booted the ball at first, and moved to second as sophomore second baseman James Cerbie (2-for-4) slapped a one-out single into left field to chase Slack. Spartan reliever Greg Smith got a groundout from junior left fielder Sam Payne (1-for-5), but both runners bumped up a base, which allowed Goldberg to score from third on a wild pitch. Gadaire drove in Cerbie to cut the Spartan lead to one, 6-5, and Weiss drew a two-out walk to keep the rally alive. Greensboro's Blake Hassebrock came on in relief of Smith and got Barna to fly out to left field to end the game and strand a pair of runners.
Davidson and Greensboro will play the second game of the series April 7 after the 'Cats host Samford at Wilson Field this week. The Wildcats and Bulldogs will kick off the series with a 7 p.m. game Thursday. Friday's game time has been moved to 6 p.m., and the teams will conclude the game with a 2 p.m. start Saturday.
